edge+stretch SUPERVISION case studY
For change practitioners and consultants, the effectiveness of their work is strengthened when they have a space to reflect on and sharpen their approach, with an independent source who can offer constructive challenges and an alternative perspective. At Edge + Stretch, we provide that through 1:1 or group supervision.
Here, independent organisational development consultant David reflects on the impact of working with Steve Hearsum during regular supervision sessions…
Need + Context
When David began working as a consultant and coach on a freelance basis, he sought supervision as a way of ‘sense checking’ his client work, and to receive expert feedback and ideas about how to approach specific challenges with clients.
Having previously known of Steve, read his book No Silver Bullet, and enjoyed his ‘no BS’ perspective, he enlisted Edge + Stretch’s supervision service and the pair began meeting every six weeks.
David's words
“The thing I appreciate that’s different about Steve is he is very explicit about what he is doing and why; sometimes, particularly if supervisors are therapy trained, it can feel like you’re dealing with a blank wall. But with Steve it’s much more of a co-enquiry – like being ‘in it together’ in a constructive way.
We don’t waste time dancing around issues; we are direct and to the point with each other. I really like not having to be careful about the language I use, I can express my emotions, and it all feels very real and genuine.”
Impact
David cites many benefits of supervision, including being challenged when there is a potential for collusion within his work, and having a quality and safety mechanism built into his practice. As well as gaining another perspective, and enabling him to ‘step outside’ of the dynamics and complex systems of his clients to view them more objectively, David feels supervision gives him the time and space to talk through the emotional element of his work, mitigating the potential for burnout.
However, these deep and challenging conversations are balanced out with humour and lightness, helping build a connection between consultant and supervisor – and ensuring sessions are, in David’s words, ‘always light and positive’.
“I always come out feeling clearer and lighter, and more sure that’s it okay not to know the answer!”
Challenging + Sincere
Reflecting on who could benefit from supervision with Edge + Stretch, David said:
“Definitely do not go to Steve if you want someone who’s going to tell you how wonderful you are and never challenge you. Don’t go to Steve if you want to stick in the nice, fluffy end of the Organisation Development world.
If you want to work with someone who’s sincere about making a difference in the world, someone who challenges you and calls you out and encourages you then Steve might be your man.”
